Prospective Lab Applicants

Undertaking Challenges in Linguistics with Neuroscience Experiments

The unique feature of our lab is that we conduct research in the neuroscience of language, an interdisciplinary field between linguistics and neuroscience, by verifying hypotheses in theoretical linguistics through neuroscience experiments.

Features of the Ohta Lab

Each student has his or her own research project. In addition, they receive guidance from faculty members on the linguistics and neuroscience necessary for their research, as well as on experimental techniques.

In promoting research and education, we emphasize DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility) in our lab. Therefore, we accept students from various academic backgrounds, such as linguistics, biology, physics, agriculture, etc. We also welcome working professionals, international students from various countries, and students from collaborative research institutions.

Desired Students

大学院・卒業研究の希望者へ

We are looking for students interested in language and the brain, and enthusiastic about studying linguistics and neuroscience.
The ideal student is willing to study not only his/her own research field but also a wide range of related fields, because we need to learn various fields to advance our research in the neuroscience of language.

We expect undergraduate students to conduct their graduation research with originality (i.e., not merely a follow-up of previous research).
For graduate students, we expect them to find a research topic or theme that they are passionate about so that they can stand on their own as researchers in the future. We also expect them to be actively involved in the management of the laboratory, including education for undergraduate students.

To Prospective Graduate and Post-graduate Students

大学院・卒業研究の希望者へ

We use language in our daily lives. Underlying this is the brain mechanisms that support the comprehension and production of language.
We examine linguistic theories and hypotheses through neuroscience experiments to clarify such brain mechanisms.

Students who are interested in the following questions are in our lab.
・What happens in the brain when we use language?
・How do children acquire language?
・Why don’t adults learn foreign languages?
・How does the brain change in people with language impairment?

We welcome anybody curious about the relationship between language and the brain!

We are always looking for graduate students, postdocs, and research students and are available to discuss your research projects.

*Students who wish to join our lab must enroll in either the Department of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, School of Letters, Kyushu University, or the Department of Linguistics, Graduate School of Humanities, Kyushu University.
